In recent years in Chengdu city, Sichuan province, violent incidents where private properties have been forcibly dismantled continually occur, leaving civilians with no where to appeal.
On the 28th of January, demolition officers from Jinjiang District assaulted a householder Cheng Quanlin and is now in hospital. His wife, Wu Zhijun, said the officers from Chengdu City had threatened them over the phone and also damaged street lamps of householders who hadn’t signed agreements with the office. Ms Wu said that nearly all of them had been driven away by halting their water and power supplies. However, Ms Wu said they would fight until the end. At present, 200 bungalow householders have had to move away due to officers’ threats. Ms Wu and another householder are the only two left and still continue to fight against the district authorities.

Chen Yanping, a rights advocate from Taiping Village, Chendu City also claims that her 82 year-old-mother had been assaulted and nearly passed away while the authorities had forcibly dismantled their workshops owned collectively by the villagers. The houses in Taiping Village have been violently dismantled many times and about 1,000 villagers haven’t had access to water for a month.

According to 6.4 Tian Net’s reports a householder in Chengdu was burnt to death as a result of the demolition and his wife and daughter are still in hospital. A 62-year-old rural woman has had her hands and feet chopped off in a more violent demolition.

Huang Xiaomin, a rights advocate from Chengdu said the main reason that people from the authorities dare to pillage citizens’ private properties through extreme means, is because the universal phenomena of lawlessness, unscrupulous behaviour and corruption in Mainland society makes people more desperate. Another reason is the government is turning a blind eye to such practices.
