Stages of the East : Last words from the Melbourne Spectacular
Welcome to Stages of the East I’m your host Daniel Teng from the SOH Radio Network. And in this program we continue our in-depth coverage of the Chinese New Year Spectacular, particularly the second Melbourne performance of the show.
Featured in this program are comments from two patrons of the Melbourne evening performance, Joanne and Jason Gallier. Who are both teachers specialising in adult education.
Incidentally ancient Chinese culture placed great significance on education. This stemmed from the flourishing of Confucian ideals. Confucius valued education as paramount, and recognised the purpose of humanity, was to better themselves through study.
The imperial examination systems, founded during the Sui Dynasty until the Ming Dynasty, where a means for all people regardless of ethnicity and social-economic background, to attain high ranking official positions. Keep in mind, only males were able to participate. But despite this shortfall, the system was quite innovative for its time. The examinations focused on a range of topics including: music, arithmetic, writing, and knowledge of customs. There was even a focus on military study such as horsemanship, archery and military strategy.
Now, we’ll be hearing the interview of Joanne and Jason Gallier:
