Breaking News – EV71 intestinal virus spreads to neighboring provinces
Since March 2008, the EV71 intestinal virus epidemic in Fuyang city of Anhui Province has gradually expanded. As of April 28th, more than 1520 juvenile cases had been reported, which was more than double of the recorded figures on April 21st. 20 juvenile victims died of the disease, after multiple organ failure in the brain, heart and lungs.
According to official announcements, the epidemic was first discovered in Fuyang city of Anhui Province during March this year, but was only publicized on the 27th of April.
Reportedly, the epidemic began in early March, when the hospital saw a steady escalation in the number of children admitted, who suffered from fever, coupled with rashes inside their cheeks, on the skin of hands, buttocks, as well as mucus producing ulcers inside their mouths. On the 27th, 28th and 29th of March, five children died of the same disease in this hospital.
Currently, more than 400 children remain in hospital under treatment and monitoring, 26 of whom are in serious condition. Victims are aged predominantly below 6, mostly under 2 years old.
The EV71 virus has now spread to Funan County, Linquan County, Yinzhou region, as well as Yinquan region. The epidemic has expanded to eight counties and developing regions in the province, as well as Haozhou City in Liqin County, and Liuan City in Huoqiu County. Cases of this disease have also been reported in Huaibin County of the neighboring Henan Province. Due to delays from the Department of Health in allowing for public awareness of the epidemic, rumors that “strange diseases” named “juvenile SARS”, “human and fauna SARS” and “foot and mouth disease” which has killed many children, continue to profuse in Fuyang City. The fear and panic continues to spread.
