Deputy editor-in-chief of China’s Southern Urban Newspaper of the Southern Urban Weekly, Chang Ping, was recently dismissed for publishing articles criticizing the crack down on Tibetans. The staff of Sourthern Urban Weekly signed a joint petition to plead for a revoke of the decision, protesting against the decision.

After the Tibet incident, Chang-ping published in the “Southern Urban Press” the commentaries of Tibetan’s “universal values”, which alleged that the recent events in Tibet shows that the Chinese government did not solve the problem of minorities. The media has been encircled by other media and internet users. His recent articles of Chengdu peoples’ stroll and reports of child labour in Dongguan issued by Southern Urban Press has caused the disgruntlement of the relevant departments that eventually dismissed Chang.

News of Chang Ping’s dismissal caused widespread concerns, particularly admist the media practitioners who reacted strongly. The former editor-in-chief of “Southern Urban Press”, Cheng Yi-Zhong, believes the incident reflected that China’s freedom of the press has been oppressed.

Zhang Ping, whose real name is Zhang Ping, is a veteran media worker, and used to be the chief of the News Department in “Southern Urban Weekly”. In 2001, as chief of the News Department of Southern Urban Weekly, he was once dismissed over Zhang Jun’s case and a “large explosion in Shijiazhuang”. Later he went to study in the USA. After he finished his academic study, he returned to China and continued to be employed by the “Southern Urban Press”.

A number of outstanding media workers from Southern Urban Press were was shocked by the dismissal of Chang Ping. To defend press freedom and protest against the suppression of speech, staff of Southern Urban Press Group recently launched a petition to plead for the stay of Chang Ping.
