In the same timeframe as the Sichuan earthquake, many provinces across China experienced abnormal climates. Numerous cities in Hubei Province suffered large tornadoes, torrential rain and hale, which brought serious damage to the local agricultural industry. On the day before the earthquake, heavy snow and frost hit Wutai County in Shanxi Province, while the Forest Park in Hebei Province also saw rare heavy snow.

According news from inside China, regions of Jingmen, Tianmen, Xiantao and Zhongxiang in Hubei Province were devastated by serious tornadoes, rainstorms and hale, which persisted for 20 to 30 minutes. In some areas, hale was seen to be the size of ping pong balls, and brought severe damage to the production and livelihood of local farmers.

In Yueko and Pengshi Townships of Tianmen City, Hubei Province, 30 villages experienced a hale storm which had not been seen for 60 years. Roof tiles were ripped and houses collapsed, and trees 30 centimetres thick in diametre were uprooted.

Hale and tornadoes caused severe damage to over 3300 hectares of farm land, 25 000 trees were snapped by wind, 42 houses collapsed, and 54 residential houses were damaged, with four reports of injured residents. Direct damage bills have been estimated to surpass 36.6 million Yuan.
