Chinese police have arrested Guo Quan, deputy leader of China’s New People’s Party, on May 17th while he was taking his son to school. He was arrested for publishing seven articles about the huge earthquake in Sichuan. It wasn’t until May 18th when his family was informed that he would be detained for 10 days.
Guo Quan’s wife, Li Jing said that the police had come to their home and warned her not to talk to outside people, saying that it would place Guo in danger. After she asked what Guo had been charged with and why he was detained, the officer answered saying there was no charge and that it was a public security penalty that had been carried out.

Guo was a human rights campaigner who had begun writing and compiling a series of articles titled ‘The First Signs of Democracy.’ It began last November and was designed to spread the concept of democracy. Police summoned him and his home was searched several times. After the huge earthquake in Sichuan on 12th May, he published seven articles outlining the New People’s Party’s suggestions on disaster rescue. His last article before arrest was called, ‘The First Signs of Democracy 218: New People’s Party urges Communist Government to release a report on the safety of nuclear installations in Sichuan.’

When asked for the reasons for Guo’s arrest, his wife Li said that she knew little about Guo’s activities, but the one thing she did know was that he wanted to speak for ordinary Chinese people and do something for the country.

This news was reported by Li Sisi, Xiwen and narrated by Daniel Teng from Sound of Hope.
