Breaking News - Chemical plants located downstream of the landslide-formed lakes in Sichuan earthquake are embattled
Yue Yi Cheng, Director of the International environmental organization Greenpeace Pollution Control Projects, said that recently a large dumping of soil phosphorus was found in the earthquake disaster areas in Mianyang City, Sichuan Province, posing serious threats to the safety of local public at lower reaches.
Yue Yi Cheng said, “mud phosphorus is a high-risk flammable chemical waste, and soil phosphorus combustion will release the highly toxic gas P2O5. Soil phosphorus was found smoking in An County, and occasionally even sparked flames, with a similar smell of rotten eggs.”
He said that An county is situated in the lower reaches of the earthquake area lakes. Once they outburst, the soil phosphorus in the factory may overflow from waste tanks into the rivers, causing more pollution and harm.
Yue Yi Cheng said that over the past two weeks some small businesses have been found disobeying the regulations by secretly running the operation or non-evacuation of dangerous goods, which poses tremendous safety threats to rescue and relief teams and people in disaster areas.
