One thousand and nineteen confirmed orphans after the Sichuan quake
Sources from China state the deputy director of the Sichuan Province Home office, Chen Kefu saying today that there are one thousand and nineteen confirmed children left orphaned after the Sichuan quake who are awaiting to be adopted. The majority of these children are placed under the care of charitable organisations and protection centres, while some are still under hospital treatment.
Many of the orphans need to be formally identified, a task undertaken by various Sichuan administrative departments. Once the children are formally identified, the adoption process can begin.
According to Chinese adoption laws, an orphan refers to a child who has lost both parents. Whilst their grandparents might be living, these children will still be classed as orphans.
Children or disabled children, under the care of charitable organisations whose parents cannot be located are not restricted by single adoption policies.
