According to Chinese sources, the biggest quake lake formed after the Wenchuan quakes in Tanjiashan, has been blocked for twenty six days. Despite continued diversion efforts, the water level of Yensai lake continues to rise. The aftershocks on June eighth has caused a further landslide creating serious concerns of the dam bursting.

Xinhua reports states an aftershock measuring 4.8 occurred at six fifty one pm local time in the region of Yensai lake. The dam shook for around twenty seconds, and there were intermittent landslides until nine pm. The effects of the quake on the dam is currently unknown and experts are continuing the monitoring and investigation.

Prior to the aftershock, rain started to fall around the lake region, leading to the inflow into the lake exceeding the outflow, raising water levels.

Once the diversion begins in Tanjiashan, the flood waters may carry with it petrol drums, boats and wooden beams sending them towards the bridges of Mianyan city. These objects with the force of the water may cause strong impacts and severely affecting the safety of the bridges.

The quake lake was formed after landslides caused by the May twelth tremors. There are around one million three hundred thousand people downstream, and around two hundred and fifty thousand have been evacuated.
