The saga of China’s infamous fake tiger photo has come to a close with officials arresting the photographer Zhou Zhenlong whom they alleged has committed fraud by producing a fake photo of a rare tiger. In addition, thirteen bureaucrats in Xiaxi are also under investigation with two deputy leaders being stood down over the incident. Web users however, are saying Zhou Zhenlong has only become the scapegoat in this affair.
On June twenty ninth, Xiaxi provincial officials received information that Zhou’s photo was taken from a painting and he aimed to derive money with the forgery. Officials say that bureaucrats have been dealt with accordingly with the head of Environmental and Animal Protection Agency Wang Wanyun.

During a press conference, Xiaxi Bureau of Public Security spokesperson said that the Zhou was the only person behind the fabrication and concluded that no other officials or villagers were involved.

This outcome has not been well received by web users who are sceptical that Zhou, an ordinary farmer is able to concoct the entire story.

Other bloggers even point their fingers straight at the Xiaxi Forestry Department saying that the government used so much resources in rewarding and publishing what has turned out to be a fake, and even guaranteed the photo was in fact, genuine. How are we to trust this government again? One blogger wrote that those responsible behind the fraud must be dealt with harshly, especially government officials who are even more accountable.
