Beijing attempts to halt Nobel Peace Prize from being awarded to Hu Jia

Recently, it has been widely speculated that the well-known dissident Hu Jia may be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for two thousand and eight, but the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao said on the twenty fifth, that they hoped the parties concerned did not grant the award to Hu Jia.

After three days of mass protests by demonstrators, officials have posted warnings around the city, requesting those named to turn themselves in. The demonstrators had earlier barricaded the gates of the government building during protests between September twenty third and twenty fifth that turned violent with individuals smashing and looting property.

Severe Rainstorms in the Earthquake-Stricken Area Lead to Landslide

On September 23rd and 24th in the Sichuan earthquake disaster area torrential rainfall has triggered landslides. The official Xinhua website reported: the rainfall claimed the lives of 8 people with 38 people missing.
