Zhong Gaoren’s article from “Ming Pao” in Hong Kong questioned Jiang Zemin’s decision to sign the treaty. He talked about the series of unequal treaties between the Qing government and Russia; where over one million square kilometres of land, equivalent to ten Taiwan’s, has been signed over to the Russians. These actions were never clearly explained to the Chinese people.

In October two thousand and four, Hu Jintao also signed with Russian President Vladimir Putin the “Sino-Russian borders east section supplementary agreement”, and assigned half of Hei Xiazi Island to Russia.

The same day a number of rights activists were summoned by the police. Chengdu rights activist Huang Xiaomin called for Ms. Rice to be concerned about the rights and safety of Sichuan rights advocates including Huang Qi and the deteriorating human rights issues in China.

On June 29 two police officers in Chengdu did not produce any procedure, forcibly taking rights activist Huang Xiaomin somewhere in an urban area. Huang Xiaomin told our reporter that with no subject, police officers made no transcript but talked of random trivia that lasted over 3 hours until they released him. Huang said:

[Recording]: “I’m not doing much lately, mostly to call for the attention and concern for the human rights of Mr. Huang Qi. That day, they also asked a number of such simple topics, in the verbal summons. We, the rights advocates, should not be deprived of rights and personal freedom because of Rice’s trip to the Sichuan disaster area.”

Police denied summoning Huang Xiaomin had anything to do with U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice’s visit to Sichuan disaster area. Mr. Huang Xiaomin hopes that Ms. Rice can be concerned about the interests and personal safety of Sichuan rights activists and the deteriorating human rights issues.

According to sources in Mainland China, in June 2008, in Gaobeidian City of Baoding, Hebei Province, over 20 Falun Gong practitioners have been kidnapped. At present, there are still a dozen Falun Gong practitioners still being illegally held in detention centres. On June 26 and 27, 20 Falun Gong practitioners were kidnapped in Ding’xin County of Baoding City, Hebei Province. In addition, on 28th and 29th June, over 30 Falun Gong practitioners were kidnapped in Xin’bin County of Fushun City in Liaoning Province. According to sources, arrests of these Falun Gong practitioners are mostly pre-arranged in accordance with the blacklist made by the local police station and the “610 Office” and some were even directly kidnapped from their work place.

It is known that in order to control the negative media reports, during the Olympics, the mainland authorities have specially arranged a spokesperson from each work unit, while others are forbidden from any contact with foreign journalists, or accepting interviews with foreign reporters.

As reflected by Mainland commoners, despite that official media has not mentioned a word about security for the Olympic Games, but in accordance with the Communists’ convention, the country is now likely in a state of alert. To the Chinese communists, the “face project” and the personal interests of the Communist Party officials well surpass the importance of human rights of Chinese people, and the lives in the earthquake-stricken areas of China.

The two Members said that the action proves what a number of human rights groups have described as the deteriorated human rights situation before the Olympic Game next month is true, although the officials proclaimed that the Olympic Games would improve China’s human rights record. “The reality is very disappointing.” Smith stressed that the situation for Chinese dissidents, rights activists and those who call for religious freedom is very grim. Regarding the joining of the CCP, Liao said “it’d be better to join the gangland as the later would at least value your devotion.” Liao said he had risked his life for the CCP, becoming a soldier when he was just 20, but the CCP has always maintained its façade through lies and violence bringing trouble to those who dare speak the truth. In his declaration, Liao Zhushen also said, “We have never invited or voted for any particular organization to enslave ourselves, what right does the CCP have to treat people like that again and again? People have the freedom and rights to refuse deceit by lies, and resist slavery by a brutal government. Moreover we have the freedom and rights to stand against murder and persecution! Every person is the master of a nation, not the slave of any group in power!”

Nearly twenty pro-democracy MPs held a public rally on the eve of July first to urge public participation in the parade. Parliamentarian Liu Hueqing said they hope for one hundred thousand people to take to the streets to fight for democracy, freedom and rule of law in Hong Kong.

At the same time, Ms Liu invited those in different sectors with different demands to join in. She said regardless of whether the public is concerned with inflation, poultry control, petrol prices or unemployment, she believes what will unite them all is the desire for increased democracy.

Independent MP, Mr Chen Fangan said that he doesn’t want their rights scrutinised by the government and be eroded by dictatorship and cronyism and also invited the public to join in the parade.

MP Li Zhouren said that the July first parade is to force Beijing to present the work it has done in the areas of inflation and accountability and hopes it don’t score zero in both areas.

The Hong Kong pro-democracy camp has asked the public to wear white during the parade to display the purity of their united hearts.

A person from Baodiao Association said, an “open letter to the Central Military Commission” is not “illegal information”, for there is not a single sentence or any remarks against the Party, or anti-government quotes in the open letter. They will continue to protest, and consider solving the problem through legal channels until the matter has reasonable results.

Liu Xiaozhu, a commentator on China’s current affairs said that the CCP should not suppress different views from within the Mainland. In any country it is unlikely that there is only one opinion, and expressing different views is quite natural. Closing down the website proved that the Communist regime harbours hidden intentions.

It is known that the gist of the “open letter to the Central Military Commission” is a request to the Central Military Commission to mobilize navy and air Forces to facilitate Baodiao action. The open letter also said that to give up Baodiao is equivalent to abandoning the common security of the Mainland and Taiwan. Currently, it is taboo to reach any agreement with Japan over the China Sea issue, or else, it would lead to the loss of territorial sovereignty, accelerating the separation of Taiwan, which would eventually result in the collapse of the Communist regime.

People from The Baodiao Association questioned the Communist regime: “the open letter to the Central Military” reflects civil voices in the normal way. We wonder which provision of the law the open letter had violated.”

The news of the removal of this moseque was reported on the Keping government website, it said that the mosque was illegally built on a grazing location in the Kumuli village and conducted illegal religious activities for 10 years. Based on ethnic and religious affairs regulations, the petition regulation, law and order, and religious management of the Keping County, they have proceeded with the qualitative punishment of the Kumuli village personnel, and say that the mosque will be demolishing before 26th of May.

According to Mr Jiang from the Post Office in Heidiang Region in Beijing the new rules are due to the Olympics Games, and there is a ban on the postage of CDs MP3, mobile phones and cameras.

Chinese residents who are attempting to post CDs have said that Postal officials are rejecting CDs and quoting “rules from superiors” that without a Public Security Bureau certificate, personal CDs cannot be sent. However, in order to obtain such certificates, police will have to go through the materials on the CD.

Ms Zhen from Beijing Post said that higher officials have regulated that all AV materials need certification to verify their content.

Another postal official said that even if he accepts the materials for postage, they will need to go through more hoops to be sent. Mr Jiang explained that they’re simply following orders from above, and even though this was never an issue, with the Olympics and increased security, there is nothing the postal staff can do about it.

Some international courier service providers in Beijing have also said that they can help in the courier of AV materials, but do not guarantee their successful delivery, and said a large number of CDs have been rejected after failing security checks.

According to sources, the CCP Bureau of Public Security’s crackdown on AV materials is aimed at preventing Falun Gong adherents, and Tibetan and Xinjiang supporters from engaging in so called “anti-CCP propaganda” with AV materials during the Olympic Games
