In the evening of May 20, survivors from the hardest hit mountainous areas of the earthquake, Nanba Mountainuous Region in Pingwu County, and Mianyang City of Sichuan, told our SOH reporter that mountain landslides triggered by an aftershock of a 5.0 magnitude occurred in the early morning of the 20th May and buried alive over 200 members of the rescue and relief troops that entered into Nanba mountainuous area. People said that the river from Nanba County to Shuiguan, Shi Kan rural ravine in the mountain was intercepted half way by mudslides that formed a hanging Lake. With the upcoming rainy season in June, it is feared that the hanging lake may burst, posing imminent danger to the lower reaches of the area.
On the 20th, survivors who just escaped from the Nanba mountainuous area of Pingwu County stated that currently over a hundred people are sheltering in Mianyang City Stadium, and over 10,000 people have not yet been evacuated from the mountainuous region.

Pingwu Communist officials had not truthfully reported the damages incurred in the quake, resulting in rescue and relief troops failing to notice in the first instance the region that suffered as much as Wenchuan County. A large number of victims buried in the rubble and debris was continuously stranded in the ruins for days could not be rescued in time and died one after another.

He said that in the past few days, aftershocks caused numerous villages to be buried by mud and rock with some rescue forces also dieing in the mud and rock landslides.

According to Mainland media reports, on the 17th May, the rescue and relief troops entered the Nanba mountainuous region of Wuping County where mountain rescue forces met with incessant aftershocks and landslides, making the search and rescue mission very difficult.
