On 3 May the Divine Performing Arts gave its only performance in Cleveland Ohio in the United States.

Audience member Mikkeli Hazel told our report “I love this show very much, she is so beautiful and brilliant, the whole performance is very orderly, colourful, people get very exciting after seeing it, it is a must see show. This is my first time to see such a scene.”

When a reporter asked her which is her most favourite programme, Mikkeli said “I like too many parts, the most favourite is the “The Fruits of Goodness”, because I am a person who also have faith, so it touched my heart very much. I believe that everybody should be treated fairly, not just Americans, the Chinese people are the same, so you can understand your own history, and I think they will be shocked when they know the truth.”

Another audience member, Linda, an accountant from Texas, after seeing the first half of the performance she said happily “I really like it, I hope the second half will be as exciting as the first half. I like the drum dancing; it is very good and very beautiful.”

On the 3rd of May, the Divine Performing Arts held the last show of its Global tour in Calgary, the Cowboy capital of Canada.

After watching the performance, Foster Walker – a philosopher, thought Divine Performing Arts is promoting the renaissance of orthodox Chinese culture, and the show gave him a new understanding of China.

Foster Walker is a professor of philosophy at the University of Calgary. His main interest is on the research of 20th century Anglo-American philosophy of sports.

Mr Walker told our reporter excitedly “Superb! Not only do I like the dancing and choreography, I also like the spiritual aspect emitted from the show. The show was simply fantastic! I could not say which act I like the most. I can only say I like every act.”

He went on to comment “Truthfulness, Benevolence, Forbearance and they are impossible to forget.”

Mr Foster also explained “I am very happy to see such splendid orthodox China’s cultural is being revived in modern society, and its affect. Such beautiful philosophy and such graceful art.”

Foster said in conclusion, the show brought him new understanding of China: “I understand that such performance can not be staged in Mainland China, I also know that these actors can not go to China to perform. I think the show presented a China that has 5,000-year of history, and is completely different from the contemporary China. I am very pleased to see this contrast. “

On 2nd of May, Claudia Wore and Rebecca Wozi, two legal professionals from St Loius enjoyed the performance of Divine Performing Arts Spectacular.

They explained how, due to the recent issues surrounding the Olympic Games and Tibet, they were concerned about China and also want to understand China, especially through the performance of Divine Performing Arts.

Ms Wore said that show took her into a new cultural world, explaining how she enjoyed the skills of the dancers, the colours of the costumes, and the presentation of the story.

She explained “the Culture is different from what we usually see; it will bring you into another domain, another place… The different culture lies in the different styles, different ideas behind the act, they are trying to use different ways to express their intent.”

Ms Wore also said that although there is difference in their country’s Christian culture and the ancient Chinese Buddhist culture, the Buddhist culture seems good.

Ms Wozi said she most enjoyed the Mongolian dance also the Tibetan commenting that perhaps it was the Tibetan issues that sparked her interest.

Ms Wore also explained, “I think the world is getting smaller and smaller, regardless of where such an event held, there must be some positive impact, to let people know more, and some things they have not familiar with. Perhaps to say it is not to accept more new things, but to refresh our memory. In addition, people enjoy it, it is very beautiful”.

Welcome, this is Corinne Malaske with Sohnetwork coming to you from Kansas City, Kansas.

The Chinese Spectacular performed at Yardley Hall in the Carlsen Center. A wonderful theater located in the Johnson County Community College. The applause was thunderous after each act and the performers received two standing ovations at the end.

I spoke with James Edgington and his wife, a retired couple, after the performance. They said, ” That is one heck of an outstanding performance you have there! Just Stunning. One stunning performance after another. Everything was outstanding. They attend many different productions, but nothing comes close to this one.

There was not one act that wasn’t outstanding. To see one act after another of this caliber, each was special and they were glad they didn’t miss it. They will welcome it back. They will recommend it to everybody.

Mark, a government worker, brought his family to the performance. They had just been at a piano recital. He had heard of the erhu. What did he think?

Ling Shiao and daughter, Christine, were at the show. They stopped to talk about the show. Christine just liked it all. Ling was impressed with the Mongolian bowl dance. Let’s hear.

This has been your host, Corinne Malaske with SOHnetwork.com. The spectacular will end May 9, 2008. If you are looking for tickets or locations, see www.bestchineseshows.com and goodnight.

On 3 May, the Divine Performing Arts Troupe completed its first performance at the State Theatre in downtown Cleveland where it attracted over 2000 people in the audience.

The Mayor of Canton City, Mr William J. Healy and his family came to see the performance. He knew of the performance from seeing it via the Chinese-American association two years ago.

Read on for more.
Mr Healy said that this show is very different, very good. He felt the most touching is the piece that has three dance performers and one of them goes to the heaven at end (The Risen Lotus Flower). He said that the story is very shocking, and it conveyed a strong message that although they can not uphold the freedom of their beliefs (the police persecute them), in the end (the Falun Gong practitioner was killed) the God and Buddha took the practitioner to heaven, and they were celebrated for this. I think this is very good and very touching.”

He went on to say, “Of course the drum beating program is also very good, very exciting and the drums were waking people up.”

He also said that the costumes were very beautiful. When the curtain opened, the entire stage was shown to the audience, including the colours of the costume, the backdrop of the stage, and all could see that this chinese show was to be very different from the usual american shows.

Mr Healy believes that this is a very good opportunity to have Americans understand Chinese culture and history. That is very good. He said he will bring his son to see the performances. He hoped that his son can understand the Chinese culture as much as he understands American culture.

On the evening of 30th of April, the Divine Performing Arts’ opening show was held in the Calgary Jubilee Auditorium in Canada. Dignitaries, artists and Chinese people from the local area expressed their admiration for the show. Everyone praised it, saying it was a world-class performance.

Ballerina Celiro together with eight of her family members and friends came to watch the show. Celiro said to reporter, “The show was unique. I enjoyed it very much. It was very spectacular. The whole show was very well coordinated. I think Chinese dance has more stringent requirements. Although it does not move very quickly, it actually requires higher degree of more accurate control of bodily parts. The show was so colourful, excellent. I think it presented China’s culture and history in a placid way.

Devvie is a ballet teacher. She said, “Very enjoyable. Beautiful costumes. Everything was so outstanding, very good performance. The performance was excellent, elegant, and extremely entertaining. It’s so different from other performances, very unique, very good. I think this performance was very beneficial for the children, and can give them a different experience.

A dancing student said, “Spectacular show, very beautiful, very artistic and professional. The choreography of the dance was excellent. The costumes simply amaze you. It was just a sheer enjoyment to the eye. And the sound form the orchestra, I actually like the entire show. I was a dancer before, so I took everything in with my eyes. The performance is so good it simply dazzles you.

The above news is brought to you by Qi Yue for Stages of the East on SOH Radio Network.
