On May 6, the The World Uyghur Congress said that in order to prevent Uyghur people from demonstrating during the Olympic torch relay in June in Xinjiang, the Chinese Communist regime has recently set up surveillance guards in its counties on streets to monitor and detain Uyghur people, transforming the city into an open jail.

According to the Chinese Central News Agency (CNA), the spokesperson for the World Uyghur Congress Dilixiati says that the Olympic Torch is due to arrive in Xinjiang in June, and as the Kashi city has the highest population of Uyghur, in order to prevent demonstrations during the relay, the city has added to its existing military police power, and is forming surveillance teams in its counties and streets. Each team consists of at least 30 people, surveying the Uyghur 24 hours a day.

Dilixiati says that the surveillance team will take suspicious Uyghurs to the Kashi detention centre, but as the centre is over filling, the excess people have been taken to detention centres in the region. Dilixiati describes Kashi city as an open jail, and many Uyghur people are living in fear that they’ll be taken into detention at anytime.

Dilixiati also said that with the 100 day count down to the Beijing Olympics, the capital of Xinjiang Ürümqi has also commenced the crackdown on political movements of the Uyghur, sending those without a census register in Ürümqi back to their home towns.

The World Uyghur Congress believes that the abuse of human rights cannot be a precursor to the Olympic Games. If the dignity of people cannot be preserved, it will be a trampling of the Olympic spirit. The Congress therefore calls on the IOC to cancel the Olympic Torch relay planned for Xinjiang.
