According to a source in Sichuan, in the city of Pengzhou, less than 100km away from the epicentre, there are still 100,000 residents who are trapped and their fates remain unknown.

According to Sichuan TV, the worst hit areas in Pengzhou are Longmenshan, Xiaoyudong, Bailu, Tongji and Tsifeng counties. The number of casualties is unknown as aside from residents buried under rubble, many more bodies are buried in the mud and are unable to be located.

Pengzhou is made up of 2 main regions, one on flat plains and one mountainous. The plains region is relatively safer, with situations worsening deeper inside the mountain. The houses on either sides of the road have basically turned to rubble. The bridge to the mountain is broken and the roads are blocked by falling rocks. No one can enter the mountain to see what’s happening there. The sliding rocks are threatening to the 100,000 residents in the mountain region. The residents are spread out, and with communication and transport difficulties, it is hard to imagine what will happen should a massive mud and rock slide occur.

There are still very few details on situations in Pengzhou.

The above news is brought to you by Yan Ming and Chris Thomas for Breaking News on the SOH Radio Network.
