With the Beijing Olympics fast approaching, the Chinese Communist Regime has stepped up its control of the internet, removing a number of discussion forums on websites. Websites such as Tianyi, Tianya and Cateye are closely monitored for their opinion oriented contents. Sichuan human rights activist Liu Zhenyou said that different levels of the communist regime are strengthening the control of speech on the internet.
Liu said that not only is the space for speech monitored, dissidents and rights activists themselves are also being closely monitored. Political dissidents who publish articles online are facing all sorts of dangers. Liu said he himself was summoned by the Zhigong city Bureau of Public Security on June 18 after his web article “Liu Zhenyou vehemently opposes the illegal police arrest of Huan Qi and others” caused panic in the communist regime.

The popular Tianyi website is under self-regulation and the committee has decided that from Juen 10, the community forum section of the website will be closed down for reconstruction.

Gueyang Analyst Zhen Ning said that he believes these self-regulation by websites is a result of pressure from the different levels of the communist regime, and is directly related to the Beijing Olympics. The Chinese communist party has placed the success of the Olympics above all else, and to ensure its smooth running, the regime has undertaken its usual approach of high pressure control methods.

Zhen said that communist officials are controlling the information accessible by web users through multi-faceted methods including IP blocks, content surveillance and hairnet filtering.
